Sanity at FOX News
I certainly had to see it to believe it, and I can only imagine that the same is true for many of you.
Apparently, Shepard Smith has been getting saner and saner by the day.
A while ago, he lost it on a co-anchor and a guest who were talking their way around the use of torture by U.S. troops. It was a fairly patriotic display, actually; very touching in a oh-look-not-everyone-on-FOX-is-evil way.
Yesterday, he suggested that, in the wake of the killing of a doctor who performs abortions and a shooting by a nutjob at the Holocaust museum, that perhaps we should all take another look at a report about right-wing extremism leading to violence. A report that was initially criticized by FOX personalities and other talking heads as part of Obama’s plan to vilify Conservatism.
(The report, by the way, was part of a pair commissioned by the Bush administration, looking at extremist violence on both sides of the political spectrum.)
Previously, Smith made himself an Internet Hero when he mocked the hell out of Glen Beck’s insanity while the rest of FOX News was attempting to hold a “Glen Beck Friday”. If you’ve ever watched even three minutes of Glen Beck, I defy you not to chuckle at this clip:
So do we have a few moments of sanity from a man who has already sold his soul to the corporate devil and is only know scrambling to cobble together the few remaining fragments of it? Or do we have a guy who took a position at a news network and, somehow, even though that network is FOX, still considers himself a journalist?
I would be inclined to say it’s the latter, and this clip in which he no doubt secures himself a place in the pantheon of FOX News Anchors Who Get The Most Hate Mail illustrates just how much Shep Smith values the truth.
Anyway, having not seen a lot of FOX since the election, let’s just say that I was amazed and impressed and leave it at that. Kudos to Shepard Smith: A Journalist.
UPDATE: It’s only fitting, I suppose, and anyone with half a functioning brain cell — and hell, Sarah Palin, too — could have seen it coming: Conservatives are now calling for Smith’s head, because he was, y’know, reportin’ on stuff and havin’ opinions and thangs that don’t be addin’ up to what was supposed to be goin’ on.
